1/48 Airfix P-51D “Cheesecake Chassie”

It’s been a while since I posted anything. My apologies but I got caught up.

I have been working on the new Airfix P51 D for our clubs “Airfix Cup” to be held at the NSW Scale Model Show on the last weekend in April. This is a quick overview of the build as I am fairly advanced on the build. AM consists of Ultracast seat, Eduard wheels and HS standard cuffed prop. Paints are MM or Colourcoats enamels, AKI Extreme Metals and varn8ishes:

As this was my first NMF scheme, I primed the build with AKI black base. I then obtained a set of homemade masks from. A mate of mine with a silhouette cutter and placed these prior to the AKI Extreme Metal 479 Aluminium:









The results are not too bad:

In reality she’s good at a metre, closer not so much as far as the NMF is concerned in some places. Still a very good build experience with few vices. Good enough to warrant a return with another kit already purchased and a slew of Eduard AM to put in it. I view these as practice for the 1/32 kits I have stashed and looking at the new Revell.

Curious then to know your opinion of Revells new 1/32 Mustang, when the time comed. Have read pretty much only positive reviews of it.

Still a very good build experience with few vices. Good enough to warrant a return with another kit already purchased and a slew of Eduard AM to put in it.

Any advice for me? I receive the kit next week. I was not thinking about any aftermarket at all except for sourcing or molding 110 gallon fuel tanks. I believe the kit comes with the 75 gallon paper and 108 gallon steel tanks, but the 110 gallon is specific to usage on the long flights in the Pacific (VLR). This is all just from early days of research.



Is the Eduard A.M. mainly for cockpit details?

Personally I would be over the moon with a good natural metal finish like yours; I believe it looks more than "1 meter credible" to my eyes! Looking forward to how you finish and present the finished project!

Bruce,
Eduard has released a new resin cockpit, exhausts, wheels, flying surfaces and more. The recent Bigsin has a cockpit, wheels, exhaust and HS cuffed and unruffled props. Have a look at this page:

The weak points for me are the seat and the wheels. I just don’t like the hatched pattern of the seat cushion and the side bars are a bit thick (but if you aren’t bothered then it is acceptable if you thin the supports). The wheels have a missing centre tread pattern for the diamond tread but the circular tread seem okay. They are keyed to the MLG so if you decide to replace them, it will require some delicate surgery on the MLG. Other than ensure you clean the mating edges and test fit before committing to glue. That and the tail is supposed to be offset so don’t go straightening it out!

I will post some more in depth photos of how I solved the issues in a little while.
