1/48 Airfix P-51D “Cheesecake Chassie”

Tamiya has a nice P 51D/K kit which I built as a F 6D recon aircraft of the 1st Fighter Squadron, 2nd Air Commando Group, Burma 1945. Note the camera ports on the aft section. I note the markings are the same as your 51-which looks great.



I painted it with Krylon silver metallic Max paint which is a very close match to the Tamiya spray recommended for the aircraft. I've also built ZM's P 51d and both are great kits. I have the ZM P 51D concept notes and Bret Green's book on the Tamiya P 51D. If anybody is interested I'll let them both go for $25 shipped in the US. Both are excellent books. PM if interested.

The ZM book will provide a good reference ( I have the He 219 book). I am away at the moment but I can also recommend the Tamiya “How to build...” on the Tamiya P-51. It features a VLR Mustang in one of the chapters. I have both the D and the D/K kits in storage so the book is a welcome addition.

I know you are on vacation, so—no worries about responding—enjoy your time off. I am grateful for your thread information! Something Stikpusher Carlos wrote about ICM being a Taniya clone resonated (1/48 versions) and I found an ICM kit as well to serve as my 1/48 P-51 entry point. I am aware of the kit issues but still feel I will be able to build another Iwo Mustang (possibly “Hel-Eter”) using this kit. You definitely helped me to make this decision by opening my eyes to the Airfix kit not being the OOB solution to my quest.

Reading this over, I realize I have buried my lead: I now have two kits of 1/48 P-51D Mustangs, and intend to build the ICM first. I may buy a resin cockpit. I may modify the wheel well. However this kit will be the test subject for the Airfix.

Rested from holidays, it was time to get back to the bench. I masked the flying surfaces and a couple of upper fuselage panels and sprayed them with AKI Extreme Metal Polished Aluminium. I then masked the anti glare panel with MM Olive Drab enamel:









Next up is the masking for the US insignia and tail serials.

It is all smoke and mirrors, or Tamiya tape and time! I have some Maketar masks for the US insignia and serials. First time with multi part masks, so we shall see how we go.

Your work is amazing. I wanted to check that this area highlighted in red is still NMF and the smoke n mirrors masking is covering the NMF...

Great work on the Mustang! NMF is something that I don't have the confidence to do yet but someday!
