Trumpeter 1/32 Stuka

Post by KennyX »

My Psychotherapist has me looking deeper into the therapeutic value of my “Eccentric propensity for building all these NAZI airplanes”. She wants me to step out on a limb and intentionally mess one up. To show myself that “Kenny is indeed the one in control.” It won’t be this one. This one is part of a grieving process which has been driving me crazy for a long time. More on that to follow.

I’ve wanted to do a Stuka for a long time and my PE accessories which I purchased for the next in my series of Galland’s Crates hasn’t even shipped yet and God only knows when they’ll get here after they do ship -I’ve had packages from Eduard held-up in customs for weeks after reaching the United States.

I need something to build now that my G2 TROP is finally in the painting stages (update on that later). This Stuka, with its 300+ parts, ought to keep me plenty busy, and keep the withdrawals away. This’ll be an out of the box build, I don’t care that Trumpeter didn’t get the cowl and spats 100% right. I’ve downloded a lot of references and to my eye, it’s close enough.

I’m excited. Engine work will begin this evening or tomorrow during my lunch break at the latest. Here’s some preliminaries-

The box. I love the artwork:

What you’re greeted by when you open the box:

Here is a sprue, neatly packaged (each is individually wrapped). This bastard is gonna be huge:

Some cockpit sidewall detail:

And here’s the paint scheme I’ll be using. I like the schnauzer dog decal used on this variant, it reminds me of my Step Father, who conceded his third battle with cancer a little over a year and a half ago. Schnauzer dogs remind me of my Step Father. He was gray. Had a gray beard. He was German. He owned a copy of “Mein Kampf” which was signed by Der Burgermeißter. NO, he was not a NAZI sympathizer. He just liked German history. All of this is what drew me to this subject in-particular:

Eastern Front. Russia. Adolf Galland has a lot to say, about Russia and how the High Command went wrong picking this as the second of a war on two fronts. And for these aircraft, that job could not have been easy. The Luftwaffe relied on the Stukas (for better or worse), to blast a pathway in for the army and armored divisions. I’m willing to wager that this out tremendous strain and wear on the aircraft. So I plan to really weather this divebomber, using it as a test bed for more weathering techniques in-preparation for other projects.

I feel like my Step Father would dig this. Here he is:

Image

He and my mom ran off when I was two. No hard feelings. He wasn’t a dick. He wasn’t a bad Step dad. He taught me how to play chess. He always took the time to talk to me, about whatever weird/deep/whatever stuff I wanted to talk about. He made me feel like a smart person when everybody else, including my actual dad, made me feel like a fuckup.

He was an absolute divebomber of a man when it came to life. He competed in the Senior Olympics not once but TWICE, during two separate battles with cancer over the course of almost 12 years. He never lost his “Lust For Life”, as Iggy Pop once put it. SO, in the words of another poet and musician I love, Jim Carrol: “...and Bobby, I miss you more than all the others. And this one is for you my brother!”

That's a damn good a reason for a build as any Kenny, and I'm sorry to hear about your step Dad. So does your interest in the Luftwaffe come from him?

Looking forward to seeing this one progress!

Cheers!

Yes it does in part, yes. His interests were wide and varied, as we had a lot of very interesting conversations about WWII, the Luftwaffe, among other topics. He was a brilliant Engineer, and like me, he had an unconventional sense of humor and many eccentricities. For a while I held suspicions that he was actually my biological dad LOL, but he wasn’t. Still, we related really well. He was a good man. And he was always good to me.

Also, I managed to get some building time in while my babies were napping! That doesn’t happen often so I have to capitalize on it when it does.

Let’s get to it! The instructions are very well-done. On-par with Eduard in terms of clarity and overall idiot-proofness:

Image

Here’s sprue “C”, which contains the engine parts. I like how Trunpeter has individually bagged each sprue, and so far has kept all components on the same sprue:

Image

And hot damn boys, here we have an engine!

Image

Now, the cowl is not designed to be removed. This engine won’t be visible unless you look deeply with a magnifier under the back of the lower cowling. Nevertheless, I will prime this, and then paint it enough such than if you should do that, you’ll see something interesting through there.

Image

That’s what i was listening to. Motörhead for some reason always helps my babies sleep. Hour and a half late afternoon nap today, and they woke up happy!

Interesting point that your shrink has made. But I wonder if they are a student of history as much as they are of their professional field. While the Luftwaffe served Nazi Germany, it was more about nationalism than ideology. Being the best air arm against their enemies’ air arms and ground forces. Historically speaking they were no worse than any other countries air forces at that time in what they did. Ethics in war, any war, is a very deep and always evolving subject. And it changes with time, not to mention a societies root views of war. Build your Luftwaffe models to your hearts content. Including this Stuka. I look forward to watching this.

Now if you are going to intentionally screw up a build, choose a more suitable kit that won’t cost much. And afterwards have fun with some firecrackers and a B.B. gun on it... I know you can still buy things that go boom in your state, unlike in our nanny state here.

Carlos,

I agree with all the points you made, 100%.

Let me clarify a few things though. My Psychotherapist has nothing against my models or the subject matter. As a matter of fact, on seeing pictures of my recently completed Emil, she said, and I quote “That is true art.”

The “intentionally making a mistake” isn’t about ruining a NAZI plane. In fact, she told me NOT to do this with my Galland aircraft. It’s more about me allowing myself to make mistakes. Seeing what little, in the grand scheme of things, is affected by my mistakes.

See, one of my issues is my dad. And I don’t want to get into all of it here. Suffice it to say, he was a student of verbally berating his kid whenever his kid didn’t perform up to standard, or whenever his kid made boneheaded, “kid” mistakes.

And she’s curious about this “accidentally dropping of aircraft” issue of mine.

These issues play a big part in why I’m such a perfectionist in terms of my art. And I wonder if they’re a part of why I’ve had such accidents with aircraft I’ve built recently.

And in the long run, it might actually inhibit me from making th best art that I can make.

So she advised me to “intentionally screw up, and let the chips fall where they may” with one. And I get to pick. And I think it’ll be a valuable exercise. But it ain’t gonna happen with this plane, or my Galland Emils.

I should hope not.
As a dad (heavily influenced by my military and law enforcement background), I can understand where your dad was coming from and wanting your kid to do their best in all they do. But knowing human nature and myself, I know that really just does not happen all the time in real life. I’m sorry to hear your dad seems to have left that scar as a result.
I think we all strive to improve our builds, attempting to improve on the next project in some way over the last. But your doc may have an idea there of a “whee I’m a kid again” build. Not so much in trying to screw it up, but in building like you once did, purely for the sheer joy of a quick finish, damn the finesse! No seam work, and hand brush painting... just have fun!

No worries about defining the why or giving more details, Kenny. My take is you may have been punished for things you did not do which is a residual guilt effect. I was curious about the drop avoidance issue when I saw the strapping you did to protect the aircraft from your last build. I believe your psychiatrist may be encouraging you to simply relax the hold a bit, but said “let the plane drop” instead; since words in dialogue are often imprecise. I was not there, I am just free-thinking what you wrote and relating to what you wrote pretty deeply.

I am rebuilding an auto in the interim as I await supply drops from an unexpectedly slow mail service. The Sixties. My Dad. The whole “men are men and women are Marilyn Monroe” era.

I truly appreciate your open and curious approach to your work. I believe this will serve you well, lead to great insight, and provide comfort as well.

I saw this post and thought, “Where is the Hellcat?”
