I also really want you to do a build with spray can paints, especially after seeing that V2 on a workbench thread... that was... a big rocket.

Note the doorknob. This Saturn V model is 5'2" tall and I shot it all with rattle cans of Wal-Mart 96-cent White. It took eight or ten spray cans to complete. Later I masked all the white and used three 96-cent Wal-Mart black spray cans to shoot the black portions. On the command module, I sprayed Tamiya Metallic Silver from a spray can.

Yeah, the only thing I didn't paint with a spray can is the detail parts that I needed a brush for.


Mostrich, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Do you accept the challenge?



Mustang Joe, you did exceptional work on that BMW motorcycle with sidecar. I'd count that as armor. I would love to see you do the 1/48 scale Tamiya one now. That would be a great comparison build.

Okay! There are so many subjects being adroitly fielded above, I just want to write a thank you to both Torben and Mark for building such incredible models of big rockets; and I wanna do that as sincerely as possible.... and I also wanna honor Carlos because yes, I have struggled with the photography of various fuselages, bombs, fuel tanks because when you photograph a tube... well, sometimes an aircraft fuselage is no longer just an aircraft fuselage! There is an old but very very true saying in commercial photography that the definition of a great commercial photographer is someone who can photograph a sausage and not make it look like... well, poop. So, in addition to bawdy or is it tawdry sexual humor I now am introducing toilet jokes. I feel a BM I mean a PM from an administrator is about to be... well, launched into my message box.



I want to do a grown up keeper real space build of the lunar roving vehicle so I am very curious to find out what you know about such things, Mark, Torben, Carlos and anyone on the forum! I see possibilities by using Shapeways in 1/24 and/or 1/32 scale which give me... well, a big uh, um, rocket.



Okay: final note goes to Mustang Joe—that is a great kit and apologies for not getting the scale right. I should know you are a quarter scale man so that is on me.

A lunar rover kit would be sweet. I don’t recall ever seeing one done in injection plastic. At least not by the original US model companies during the Apollo program. Perhaps a short run kit is out there. I saw one when I went to Kennedy Space Center this past November. So the source for any kit is right there. I’d personally like one in 1/48 to go with my Lunar Module kit.

Sorry for the crappy pic of a pic, but this doesn't come out of the frame. Taken I think around 1978 or '79 at Kennedy Space Center. My driver that day was Alan Bean, Apollo 12 astronaut who walked on the moon, and later spent time on Skylab.
Had lunch with John Fabian several years ago but I guess the Rover was in the shop that day. That pic is in my tool box at work though.

  Four lunar rovers were built, one each for Apollos 15, 16, qnd 17, and one that was used for spare parts after the cancellation of further Apollo missions. There were other LRV models built: a static model to assist with human factors design, an engineering model to design and integrate the subsystems, two 1/6 gravity models for testing the deployment mechanism, a 1-gravity trainer to give the astronauts instruction in the operation of the rover and allow them to practice driving it, a mass model to test the effect of the rover on the LM structure, balance and handling, a vibration test unit to study the LRV's durability and handling of launch stresses, and a qualification test unit to study integration of all LRV subsystems.
  The National Air and Space Museum lists four LRVs in its collection.

Cool photos Stik. I built one of those M113's many years ago, in the overall white scheme. NASA returned their first batch of M-113's and got newer ones, which were painted white, and then later rescue green.







There was a very good article on these in an old IPMS magazine. Infact I used a photo of the KSC Fire / Rescue badge to make the ones on the model. I built this must be 18-20 years ago, so it is not looking the the best, the white paint did not age well

lol - that's what I love about SPAM - jumping from Tanks to rockets to NASA and nobody cares - in any other forum this thread would have been locked for going off topic!

You got to meet Alan Bean? You lucky sod. He's one of my heroes - not only because of the moon, but because he's a really decent guy and a fantastic artist! I'd love to own one of his paintings!

Anyway, back on topic - the basic painting has been finished. Not my best work but it'll look ok once weathered etc.



Anyway - back to NASA!
