Bruce, I can’t quite describe my feelings to my visits there as anything less than a pilgrimage of sorts. I have my personal religious beliefs, but I am not a devout man by any means. And I have been to all sorts of places of varying historical or cultural significance, famous and infamous, sacred and profane. None have ever evoked quite the same reaction inside me.

A judge at a IPMS show would not look twice at your build if the paint was that sloppy in the wing. Unless you provide pics.

I am far too sensitive, tender and naive to enter the world of contests... but I support all of you who do so and your wins I celebrate. However I thought if I was going to the “Nats” this year I would take a super detailed 1:48 Aries 1B from AJA Models which is one of only a few made and have it personally cherried within the finest hair of perfection on the perfect brush... and I probably would still have a nervous breakdown! So, in the land of “Do as you please,” is where the kid stays.

Bruce, I think your work is comparable to most of the entries in any contest out there. I have been to hundreds and judged at many of them so I know of which I speak. Still, if you feel it ain't for you, come and see one anyway. You don't even need to bring anything; just come and see the other work out there and ask questions of many of the modelers and learn many new techniques. Finally, coming to one without an entry gives you the chance to share some camaraderie with several dozens of like-minded modelers.

Also, most contests have a Display Only table where you can place your model to be seen by others but not judged. I know a number of Masters who have taken advantage of those tables to place their models for viewing while giving other modelers a chance to compete. Personally, I feel that work like yours with the attention to detail you put into your work deserves to be seen by many people, especially if you place a booklet of pictures from these Forums next to it! I highly encourage you to come to Phoenix to the IPMS Nationals; you'll be able to see my entire small scale armor collection in one big display. That is something I do want you to see and it will be the last time this collection comes out for viewing until I break a thousand completed armor models.

Until then, come on down to Hobby Day to build something; come on down to IPMS to socialize with modelers like me and Carlos and have some fun!

I'm gonna go with what Mark said. You don't even have to bring anything. I can guarantee that you'll have a blast and it'll motivate you to show that which is right there with the best I've ever seen Bruce. Don't cut yourself short bro.

There has been so much work today and now I feel beat but need to go to the gym. I definitely delightedly appreciate your words about the value of fellowship and friendship. Bruce, don’t sell yourself short. You are quite the talented modeler yourself. With just the right touch of madness...
I agree with Mark, in that just go look and see a contest or two for yourself without entering. Just look and see what others do. It is enlightening. Of course there are the masters, and those are the ones who inspire you to improvement. And then you see the work that you know you can top. Seeing both can awaken that drive to compete in you. Or simply drive you to do more, without competing against others, only against yourself and your last project.

I really appreciate the viewpoints you are sharing with me, Carlos, Mustang Joe and Duke!! You certainly have made valid points about being a part of competition as a gathering (from the movie Highlander it was the “quickening” when the warriors leveled up) with like minded individuals who are able to share their experiences... and to receive an experience which will improve mine. That is worth seeking!
