1:48 Tamiya Corsair

Cool... I was thinking how to mock up the effect using flesh tone or red mixed with white for salmon base coat, followed by a rubber cement stippling, pull some of that once the paint cures, next color coat of ZCY, more rubber cement and/or hairspray, then add Insignia White... by the time I thought through the steps on three color layers and two effects layers I was asleep.

I’ve been contemplating it and experimenting, too.

I sprayed my Tamiya Zinc Chromate over the black. Then hit it with Tamiya Clear. Then I blasted it with hairspray. Next came a rough approximation of Insignia White, which still looks a little too white to me. After that, I moistened a sharp cotton bud and went to town. I was happy with the effect, but unhappy with what happened to the Zinc Chromate underneath. It turned interior green on me LOL This is a function of that color being sprayed over black. Now, if you spray enough on there, it’ll look like yellow Zinc Chromate. But I’m willing to wager that during the chipping process, some of that color came off along with the white, thus dropping the opacity too much and letting the black show through, turning it green. Okay. Fine. Windex the bastard and try again. Which is precisely what I’m doing. This time I’m going to spray silver over the black. Then, I’m gonna bomb the living Bejesus out of those wheel wells with the Zinc Chromate. Then let it rest and set up extra long. After that, the hairspray, and then Insignia White.

So stay tuned for the Do-Over. I’ll document each step here.

I like the weathering you are doing a lot but agree that you need to redo it. I like Mig Ammo’s ZCY, but I have found the finish to be delicate even after curing. I was wondering what would happen if you took a brush and textured Superfine Milliput to create a bumpy, blistered surface for the Insignia White to cover....

That would certainly take it up a notch, Bruce. There wouldn’t be flatness. You know how stuff can buil-up, right? That’s what you’d be simulating along with the chipping. And it’d probably be pretty awesome.

And yep. On the redo, I’m not going to be as aggressive. Debris doesn’t hit that metal in a side to side motion. It doesn’t rub pint off like that. It’s a front to back, and bouncing around type of thing I bet.

The 1:48 kit’s details in the wheel wells aren’t all that well-detailed. God damn limitations of Polystyrene... on my To-Do list is learning how to scratch-build the finer details like that. Because sooner or later I’m gonna want to do BIG HOG in 1:32 and you better believe that Corsair Do-Over is gonna be super-detailed. Super-Corsair, like my Super Emil Jr. idea.

Also, Bruce, the Corsair is fast becoming my favorite airplane. I’m not saying it’s surpassing the Emil. I’m just saying I’m glad we have Axis and Allies, because I need more than one favorite aircraft.
