Those small gaps were the result of me being hasty and not he engineering of the kit. This is a very well-engineered kit. And I have two more! The Bird Cage variant and another one of these, too. Won’t make that same mistake again.

Anyway, no time for shooting primer today. Therapy at 1, then back home to enjoy hanging out with my wife and babies. Took the afternoon off because I’m working all night Friday night and Saturday night too. SO, bench Press Day at the gym in the morning tomorrow, then fishing, then primer, then work. Painting starts this weekend!

I didn’t have any time to prime this bad-boy over the weekend. I worked a damn-near all-nighter on Friday, worked more on Saturday, and on Sunday I didn’t do jack shit except play with my kids, eat Popeye’s Chicken, and enjoy the Father’s Day festivities.

My goal this week is to get this aircrafts primed, and begin painting.

I’ve been thinking though—

Would two-later chipping (down to primer in some areas and metal in others) be appropriate for this scale? 1:48 isn’t huge, and the paint chipping I see in photos is rather small. I’m thinking just down to metal in some places, conservatively, would be fine.

What are your thoughts, gentlemen?

Use your Scale Shrinking Ray... stressed, oily and faded paint... if you’re asking how much is visible in 1/48 and whether or not you should prep the whole bird... it’s your bird so go for it; it’s what is appealing to your aesthetics that matter. Personally I see a lot going on here that I would try out... and 1/48 is very revealing.

Man, Bruce, that’s a lovely photo. And I get you.

My artistic sensibility tells me to go for the two-layer chipping, and try it with my small Tamiya cotton buds, the pointed ones, and let the chips fall where they may. Kind of a sipping effect like I see in that photo.

OH! And by the way- my Bird Cage arrived safely!! Just waiting on my Brassin Pratt and Whitney from Eduard for my Hellcat!

Whatever you decide I support. In this case, you may want to synthesize a top panel bleaching with engine oil streaming from the reservoir through the wings, with the majority of chipping being handled by a Prismacolor pencil, Molotow marker (or any silver marker) combination. If you are not a fan of chipping a hairspray layer, this ought to be “dollars to doughnuts” a damn fine approach (and I do know you have worked this approach previously, so...)

That’s sound advice as always. Thank you! I’m a fan of that Prismacolor, indeed. I do like the hairspray layer, too though. The chipping came out real nice in those wheel wells that way. But what I definitely don’t want to have happen is have it come out looking like a Zero, with miles of paint missing. It’ll be an exercise in restraint whatever I choose. And there’ll definitely be fuel stains and bleaching, for sure!

And thank you! Yes sir- work can be hell sometimes. But we get through it. It ended up raining all day so I couldn’t shoot any primer. That sucked. I still shoot primer outdoors. That’s smells terrible LOL ... we’ll see how it’s looking tomorrow. I’m ready to start on the painting work.
