ZSU-23-4M Air Defense System
Re: ZSU-23-4M Air Defense System
A busy but enjoyable night! It’s great whenever you have a cool kit that just seems to fall together nicely like that. You’re gonna be painting soon if you keep up like that, and I’m excited to see what you do with it.

Re: ZSU-23-4M Air Defense System
It'll be a couple days until the paint hits. I've been looking around online trying to figure out the correct color for the Czech version. from what I've found out it's FS 30118 Flat Field Drab. I've got three colors to compare and decide before making a final decision. The only thing left I need is the Czech roundels.

Comparison of FS 30118 Field Drab...
Model Master #4708 Field Drab
Model Master #4847 Dark Earth ANA 617
Tamiya XF-52 Flat Earth

I've already ruled out right away Tamiya Flat Earth because it's too brown Field Drab is my possible final choice over Dark Earth ANA167 because both are similar but Dark Earth is more brownish than Field Drab. The Field Drab, even though it's hard to tell from the picture above; it is the shade of green with a bit of brown undertone that I may be looking for. I don't know. Unless someone can point me in the right direction for the correct Czech FS number to replicate the Czech People's Army.
Unfortunately, my Model Master #4708 Field Green is pretty much gummy and thick. I'll have to buy a new bottle regardless.

Field Drab does look as if it would work best. Well done on the progress here too. Looks like this is coming along well.
Oh, and that "spotlight" is actually the radar used to direct the guns. That and the rate of fire is what makes this vehicle so potent against aircraft.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Yeah, I found out that late last night.

Re: ZSU-23-4M Air Defense System
Spent the last couple days painting the guns..
First coat painted Steel, dry brushed using Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey, and finally brushed on Model Master Black Detail Wash. Tomorrow, I will spray a clearcoat to seal it all in. (the bottom gun, appeared darker due to shadows)

I had originally thought of painting them flat black but thought they would look too boring, ordinary, and "blah"....
Hopefully, at some point this weekend, I will pick up some Field Drab and BMF Silver for the Skyrocket kit, Any advice on how to go about modulating other greens with the Field Drab to make it look like a real armour vehicle should? I don't want to over complicate things - just simple modulation.
The tracks still needs to be done so my thought is to paint as directed using Steel, then dry brush with Gun Metal perhaps?

Still haven't had a chance to lay down some paint but I did start trimming the threads of the sprues to prepare for assembly and paint. I also stopped by my local Harbor Freight and stocked up on these:

Not bad for 99 cents with coupon for 10 pairs.

Re: ZSU-23-4M Air Defense System
I’m not a “modulation” painter, so I can not offer any advice there. I do like black basing now that I have tried it. And of course, the classics of pin washes and dry brushing.
My suggestion for the tracks is to mix in a dark grayish brown into the dark steel for the base color of the tracks. Then dry brush a lighter brighter steel onto the tracks.
