Yes. I hesitated bringing that trash to the attention of Spa Modeler Forum, but I needed to vent those gases out the airlock and wanted to give the crew a head’s up. I am staying away from FB modeling sites for now.

I can grok that. 100%. I’ve been limiting my time on FB modeling groups too, for this exact reason.

Frankly, I like the modelers here. Many of the other modelers I see out there on FB and whereever are totally out to lunch, bro. Seriously.

But you know what? It’s the same with the Powerlifting groups, the Jiu Jitsu groups, even the meme groups (that’s why I started my own, with my own rag-tag band of refugees who got banhammered from Prime for stupid reasons).

I dislike a lot of the Internet groups. Facebook and otherwise. But I really like it here. So I’m staying.

I used that because I wanted something “Earthy” in terms of subtle tones on there, to build on with oils to simulate some of the dirtiness that might accumulate there. Just something subtle. Just a nice little bit of weathering that isn’t as stark as plain old black showing through. Just barely discernible, just a tiny touch:



I’m also glad I used the Deck Tan in there. I like how it comes out when the light hits it right.

I was thinking about it like setting up a foundation for weathering with oils later on. The issue I had was that I didn’t want a hull red stripe running down the middle when finished. What I was shooting for was more of an earth tone effect in there, or just a touch of one. What I was shooting for was not having to go so heavy on the blend coat in that particular area. I was afraid that if I just went straight to the RLM65, it’d just leave heavy black empty spaces in there. I figured the Hull Red would be nice because it’s earthy, and a nice step up in opacity, and figured it might soften that for me. Which it did to a degree. Just a bit of it comes though, but my iPhone camera isn’t picking it up well. It does at least show the softness in the modulation.

Awesome paint work Kenny! Although I don't use it myself, I love watching the black base technique unfold. My technique is the inverse (dark on light vs light on dark) but the result is very similar... modulation and tonal variation in an otherwise uniform color. Have you thought about masking the wheel wells prior to painting? Pieces of wet tissue paper is an easy way to mask an irregular space.

Yeah buddy, I’ve seen how you do that, and I’m a big fan. I’ll tell you, that’s a great way to skin a cat you’ve been developing. I dig it.

As to the gear bays- yep, that’s a good method. What I’m planning on doing here is brush painting the gear bays, and then seeing what happens with some of the oil paints I have. In the past I airbrushes the and washed them, and was happy with the results, but I felt like I could get more texture and character out of them with other methods. So I’m gonna try this out and see how it goes.

I was thinking I could use my medium/soft brushes to get in there and swirl the paint, dab it on, etc. to get an interesting textured look. And it appeared as though it was working, but when I got back from the gym and had a look, I saw nice, smooth, homogeneous color. Which, hey- that isn’t so bad all thing’s considered. I mean if the only thing that goes wrong is the paint comes out nice and even and smooth, that isn’t so bad.. And I’m still going to get in there are weather them with oils, so that’ll add some character.





Okay. I guess it’s time to mask the top and start on the sides and horizontal stabilizers and rudder and stuff. I may do that tomorrow, or I may shift gears back to my tank, I’m not sure which. It’s wheels time. But wheels don’t excite me. Tank wheels are mildly boring. So we’ll see.
