That happened because of the way the kit is engineered. It’s just like the real thing, in that the wings can fold up, or be displayed down. And when I was gluing the pieces together, I had a nice, sturdy, flush, positiive fit except in that one particular area LOL. Think like it was a pane line which was two panel lines wide, instead of one. Wasn’t bad. But wasn’t good either. There should be a line where those wing parts meet, but not a gap.

That gap I had, if you blew it up to the size of the real aircraft, would’ve maybe been like a half inch. So I had to fill ‘Er with the CA, and I’ll rescribe.

Speaking of the “vagaries of interpretation” here’s the only extant photo of my subject:

Here’s how Roy interprets it, based on his research:


“TOJO EATS DOODOO” has been pretty hotly debated. Two tone scheme? Faded three tone scheme? Two tone scheme with newer navy blue on leading wing edges? Was the tail really gray?

I intend to paint it as called-out in the above because I think it looks cool. I guess that’s the deciding factor, in a debate where there’s only one photo, and you know a little bit about the earlier aircraft that were flown at the same time- “Is the scheme at least accurate for the period?” Yeah. “Does it look cool?” Oh you bet it does.

Definitely open for debate there.... The cowling and possibly the near landing gear leg cover appearing to be taken from other aircraft. The cowlings and outer wings show evidence of three tone type coloration. Perhaps some field applied work?

The conclusion they came to concerning the darkened wing edges was indeed “field applied paint” most likely to cover up a multitude of chips along there. And let me tell you, I don’t relish the idea of painting that dark blue on there, at all. Because speaking from the side of me that is an artist who likes to paint- I don’t like that color at all, in my subjective opinion, it’s ugly. I plan to lighten it a bit with white.

And bro, check out the tires! They appear to be mis-matched!

It is an interesting airplane a few fellas have built and weathered. I saw them and said to myself “I could do that... I totally could do that!”

Assembled the cockpit module, installed it, sealed up the fuselage, and attacked the wing assembly. BOOM!

I think this is a great subject and Carlos makes an intriguing point about the landing gear.... I personally find nothing offensive in having non spec blue applied as a field repair—at least not aesthetically—but I respect your feelings on the subject. Your idea to lighten or fade the color makes sense to me! What I most enjoy about the way you work is how fearless you are when trying out new techniques. Keep going!

Also I had planned to take an old 1/32 Corsair to do this same project after reading Roy’s blog!

Got some lunch break modeling done today.

Got some simulated oxidation effects going on behind the engine:



I brushed Red Brown and then Hull Red on there. The same way I weathered the exhaust on my Panzer.

I also took the time to address the center-line seam, get it sanded and then polished smooth. No issues there and no issues with re-scribing. I also took the time to address a small step. You can see it there in the last picture, the little putty rectangle took care of it:







I’m going to get started on the landing gear. Got some modifications to make to it, and PE to attach. I won’t be able to prime this thing for the next few days due to weather anyway.
