They’re claiming it’s a 109 E3:

Yes, for Battle of France I imagine most were E-3s. But the werknummer would be the determining factor.

Ken—huzzah! Looks fantastic! I would say “Perfect,” except then you would lay down your gear and go off into the sunset having achieved the impossible! Good gravy, my man! That is off the charts! So much better!

As a research backup point, here is an aircraft blueprint I posted on page 1 of the build log—way back in the salad days—and the reason I post this is because of the number seven as in seven panels between cockpit rear bulkhead and the tail. It’s a consistent number and the fuel filler and the first aid kit are always in the same spots. So, yes, there will be variations, and different design elements and different factories and different factory masks, and different weather conditions on the days the camo was sprayed, and different camo thickness, but oh my, oh my, those panels do give relative distance. Barring side angles and other physical profiles, there is the number seven, seven panels which appear equal and probably are, and Ken has lined up the markings according.

Let’s just add to the confusion and make my Paralysis of Over-Anysis even worse! Apparently some interpret this aircraft with that Werks No. as what follows...

The original page I posted specified W.Nr 5398 which is an e3, and some say it looked like this:

https://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Bf-109E/JG2 ... 0-V0A.html

Not this:

My theories-

1. Two different aircraft, and somebody got the W.Nr. of the earlier one wrong.

2. When it originally took to the air, it looked like what I’m building. Later during the battle, the markings were deliberately changed.

3. Everybody is wrong and Galland actually flew a NAZI UFO which was built based on technology the Reich’s top scientists discovered at the site of a crashed flying saucer and the German government has been covering it up since the early 1940’s.

At this point, the build can either stop, I can completely change it, or continue how it is. I am disinclined to stop, disinclined to change it, and disinclined to research/speculate any further.

I am also disinclined to add the red no-step delimiter lines to the wings.

Also, many thanks again, Bruce! Much appreciated, seriously. I’m glad you reached out and we reviewed that. And I feel a lot better about making the final revisions. V.2.0 makes me a lot more content.

Now what I need to do is pull myself out of the W.Nr rabbit hole and proceed from here.

And just to muddy the waters a little more, here is a great article on 109 paint schemes at that time...

LOL Carlos, are you trying to make me schedule an emergency session with my Psychotherapist, today? LOL I have stuff to do!

But you’re right. This is a deep rabbit hole. Real deep. And dark. This confuses me like Algebra did when I was a kid.

Oh now lookee here!

The instructions;

And this:

That’s interesting.

Okay, so, perhaps my demarcation line is a shade too high and unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, that cross isn’t actually lined up against that panel line... but things seem more or less sort of “correct” elsewise.

I have a headache.

The vagaries of interpretation.... that's the beauty and the curse of Luftwaffe camo schemes. It gets even muddier as the war progresses and the war machine in Germany goes on the defensive. I'll usually defer to photos, if available, and then interpretations from a (hopefully) known/respected authority. Kit instructions would be lower on that list. If that last photo you posted is the plane that you are modeling, I would try to follow that example... camo separation along the bottom edge of the canopy on the nose but slightly above that on the rear fuse and also the placement of the fuselage cross. However, if I found that photo late in the game, I'd just try and get it as close as I could.

There’s no way I’m redoing that camo, at this stage. For me and this project, what I have done up to this point is fine.
