"Here I am, my whole life is this one expanding circular !#*%-up, and I think it’s about to close out with me having stress dreams about things not lining-up with panel lines. What I’m saying is, I was aware that I might have lost my mind."

Bruce, it looks was better indeed. But there is -er, was- still a problem. At certain angles they looked fine, but on closer inspection, they were tilted backward just a bit. I noticed it this afternoon.

Look carefully at where the arrows I drew are pointing to:
Image

You’ll see the tilt now. You can’t un-see it.

The placement in terms of where on the fuse, that’s fine. The problem is, I focused too much on aligning it with the camo demarcation and must not have paid as much attention to how itnlines up with the panel.

My mistake.

Now, in my therapy, I have learned that I have options. My consciousness is elevated in such a manner as to allow for me to see the trigger and resulting urge to obsess over it arising in my mind, and I have the options of either rolling with it, or choosing a different option, like living with it.

I decided I can’t live with that, nosir! I stripped them, toot sweet!

And no problem, there’s more crosses on the way, they’ll be here in a couple of days. When they arrive, same position, but aligned better.

Until then, markings continue, and landing gear, exhausts, and canopy will be painted.

I am not a “sane” individual. Not by a long shot. Not when it comes to this stuff anyway.

My favorite scene is at the bar when he lights up Harrelson about his penchant for a certain kind of woman “who looks like a young Maggie,” but the series is never defined so well as when he tells the truck stop hoe not to trust him; contrast that with his partner whose whole basis is selling trust to others—that’s fantastic conflict right there.

Your “Don’t screw this up,” mantra re Season 3 is my mantra.

Re this—not to worry as long as you draw guides in erasable pencil and measure a hundred times and share photos out as you coax that decal into its spot. I loved what you wrote about decals knowing where to go... yea man that’s gravity for ya.

Yeah buddy!

That JG26 cross will be here in a few days, and I’ll do just as you said in the above, to get it right.

Also, I find it interesting that you seem to have an affinity for the same scenes I do, as well as you pick out the same things about the show that I do. Hmmmm.... We are a lot alike. I just hope you are less crazy than me LOL but it’s really difficult sometimes!

I have the same sickness but I've accepted it as a damn good trait to have as a scale modeler. It's like a knife in your pocket. It pokes you from time to time until you figure out how to wield it properly. You are not alone. Our mantra, like it says on Roy's Barracuda Studios website, is "when good enough isn't good enough."

I've scrapped applied decals before. I enjoyed the process of purposefully pulling them off with masking tape when we usually try so hard to protect them in place. In addition to fixing that tilt, you now have the option of going with a smaller cross to match the photo although you may end of with a gap between the camo line and top of the cross.

FYI... Maketar is one of the companies that provide paint masks for Luftwaffe crosses...

John,

It certainly isn’t a “life or death” thing for me anymore, I’m grateful for that. But it’s a fundamental part of my nature, this nit-picking, and it’ll remain. At least nowadays it’s an option.

And you’re right, 100%, sometimes you gotta do better. And other times you gotta do even better than that! That’s how this thing here is, for me. We’ve got the placement, now Injust need to get ‘we on there square. And if it should happen to kiss, or even intrude upon the demarcation a bit, that won’t bkther me because it’ll be aligned in its place properly, and a case could be made that it does sort of do that in the reference photograph we dug up.

And yeah, is oddly satisfying, pulling them off, ain’t it? Those Eduard ones came up with no fuss at all. I was surprised. Thought I’d have a mess on my hands. Not even a single chip in the paint.

Anyway, this will give me time to do the stuff I always put off- landing gear and stuff. So this is good.

Bruce,

That article you linked is seriously blowing my mind! HOLY COW!!

You could always adjust the top camo line with a slight overspray... stir the pot stir the pot...

The reason Stanley Kubrick deserves every bit of his fame is wrapped up within his obsessive mindset. He told his writers that if they could describe a scene he could film it.

The night Jerry Lewis coined the phrase: “You can’t polish a turd,” Kubrick was in an adjoining edit suite cutting 2001 A Space Odyssey. When Lewis said that to Kubrick, Kubrick responded: “You can if you freeze it.”

That attitude keeps me going: there is NO difference between doing something and doing something RIGHT. If I need to polish a turd, the freezer is in the next room.

Bruce,

That was a brilliant thing and the best possible thing for me to read before I go to bed. Holy cow what a great night cap! Oh man...

And he’s right you know, Kubrick. And 2001 was awesome.

What it all comes down to here I guess is how far we’re really willing to go.

But there’s something else, too. And this is the part I cant explain too well.

This kit I’m building was my first kit coming back to modeling. Well, the first one I “finished”, that is. And on that one I did this marking option:
Image

Oh God, it was awful LOL The final product was a turd that I don’t think even Kubrick could polish, even if he did freeze it HAHAHAAA But that’s where I fell in love with the splinter camo. And that’s where I took a liking to that high demarcation line. And when I saw the Galland option was painted in a similar way, it was like a win/win for me. Do another Galland aircraft AND get that paint job. I had my heart set on it. It became this inextricable part of my vision. So that didn’t really bug me when I found out it wasn’t correct...

...but my first attempt at the crosses did. And later, my second attempt at crosses bugged me because they were slightly tilted.

Why one and not the other?

So weird, especially when considering how I went back and fixed the demarcation on my last Galland Emil, somehow without disrupting the mottled camo job I’d already completed. After only using an airbrush on one previous model. Jesus...

The camo doesn’t bug me. This isn’t going to a show or competition. Shoot, nobody else but me and my wife and kids, and you and the rest of the gang here will ever see it in person if you should ever come over for dinner. I feel fine leaving it.

But the crosses. I had stress dreams about them. My vision was so intense and set in stone that I had stress dreams about it...

Well, all I can say is- moving forward on TOJO and my Horst Tietzen Emil, I gotta make sure all my ducks are in a row!

What you describe—and you wrote this beautifully—is the reason Beowulf exists. All the night creatures have specific appetites—some like camo, some like crosses. I am glad you’re willing to move in the metaphysical realm. That’s what elevates the work and sets your feet on the path to revelation.

This is a turd I am trying to polish:

Bruce,

Thank you! Heh, I’m of the mindset that Metaphysics are the best Physics. My Psychotherapist enjoys my Metaphysical tangents. And supports them. Getting validation from good friends as well as people with PhD.’s is a good thing.

Yeah, I don’t know which of my Archetypes or Shadows is so attached to that geometric perfection insofar as those crosses are concerned. It really makes me wonder. I think perhaps that at its base level, the programming it got was from my dad. He’s a Physicist and Mathematician. He’s a very precise and orderly man. Always has been. This wasn’t easy growing up, as I have always been of the more artistic bent.

What I also find reassuring though is that there does seem to be a harmony between this all-consuming desire for order in certain regards, and my artistic vision. I can paint it this way, with these colors, make it look like this and yes, crosses of the right size and look for the period, perfectly aligned have their place and add to the gestalt. I look at this harmony as a healthy thing after doing some reflection on it.

And Bruce, what you got planned for that bad-boy you posted right there?
