Thanks, Ken. I have to mount the tracing paper and cut some styrene rod and glue some of the same styrene rod together. I am kind of looking for music to accompany this task... perhaps something calm and soothing and warm. L.A. was warmer today, just a touch. Just enough to make a difference.

I’ve really been enjoying some 80’s synthesizer movie soundtracks... perfect stuff for working to. Escape From New York, The Thing, Risky Business...

Carlos, Tangerine Dream’s score for Michael Mann’s The Keep should be on that GREAT list. Thank you so much.



Please do watch and let me know if Michael Mann has the armor correct for the period... I always wondered about that detail and now I know whom to ask...

Engine Bracing Proof of concept :




I test drilled two holes, added and trimmed .020” rod, glued in place with Mr. Cement Deluxe. Since I do not know exactly where the braces are located in terms of distance within the engine cowling from front to back I am holding off doing any more here. My Spidey senses tell me that the braces need to be located closer to the front, but I really am not sure. I need to wait for my Valiant Wings Publishing Dornier Do 17 Z Airframe Resource Book to arrive. A link to a review of the book is below. Me likely, though. In appearance the braces are delicate and tough, strong enough to stay put within the cowlings and I think the design will compete well with the Airfix versions. Please do let me know if there is a way to improve upon this testing. I am looking for simplicity as well as fidelity. Early kit designs seem to exist in a sweet spot between these two concepts.

Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack for Risky Business too and it is worth giving it a listen. Great stuff.


As to the engine braces, have a look at this photo, which I pulled from Falke Eins’ Luftwaffe Blog, and compare it to your pic:





I think, based on this comparison, that you’re definitely heading in the right direction positioning-wise insofar as fidelity is concerned. And you’re doing a fantastic job, too!

Bruce, I’ll take a look at “The Keep” intro and get back to you. I do like some Michael Mann films, “Heat” and “Last of the Mohicans” being among my favorite movies. Listening to those 80’s synthesizer soundtracks reminds me of how well “Stranger Things” hit the mark in that area. Especially after listening to “The Thing”. I need to find some Vangellis now...

Kenny, I listened to the Risky Business score as I was working yesterday on my project. Tangerine Dream just lets you mind flow as you work.

BSY, you build so many projects, I am not remembering you new Airfix Do-17. Now I need to go look for it....

Carlos! x 10,000 and 100 points for style too on the Stranger Things insight. That show would’ve been great as it is but here’s what pushed it over the cliff for me: they successfully made it a period piece, 80’s, and the musical score was dead-on accurate and absolutely perfect to go along with the visuals. For me, that’s what took it from being a great show to being an excellent show in all respects.

Ken, Thank you so much for your insight, and the photo! Great reference! Last night Kari sent me a batch of FAF Do 17 engine reference. I am going to add these here as I have not given up on the idea that Stuart might walk into a hobby shop or Kari might or you might and pick up a newer tool Airfix kit. Here we go:

I have two questions—are there multiple configurations and more braces being used? There is a collar that looks like it has openings for multiple positions of supports. Perhaps these are simply not used. Also the Ken photo find and Kari references seem to indicate a more forward position—and perhaps bent forward. Please do let me know your thoughts.
