I knew you guys would get it!!!!

Bruce, I’m definitely going to have to go that route- making my own base and stuff, because the one supplied with the kit isn’t all that good. And that example there that you shared is totally awesome and more in line with what I want to do.

Carlos, I thought about doing that! The only thing stopping me really is the fact that I wouldn’t know where to begin when it came to a derelict like that, and what scares me about the idea of doing a piece like that is, I’d probably want to go about it the same way I did the paint chipping- “Why simulate it when I could DO it...” hehe and I’d end up building and painting it and weathering it, and then blow it up!

Wait a minute...

That sounds like a whole lot of fun.

I’ll just be pricing AT-AT kits on amazon. I buy all my M-80’s local.

The Bandai Star Wars kits are super fun to build. Amazing engineering that makes you wonder what a Bandai aircraft model would build like. I did a 1/12 Stormtrooper and gave it to my daughter to guard her desk at Berkeley...

Kenny, it is still armor so go for it! That is gonna rock!

Reminds me of a pic I saw with Rommel in the foreground in profile looking into the distance. Behind him was another tank and an AT-AT in German camouflage and crosses with a German commander halfway out of the AT-AT commander's hatch. What a scream!

Bring it on my friend, I want to see that!

I am really excited about this project! I couldn’t get the idea out of my head after I mentioned it to Bruce. It’s got everything. Pataphysics. Star Wars. WWII. It’s hilarious. I’m really stoked about it. And I’m not going to really be able do any other armor until I finish it LOL, it’s one of those all-consuming ideas/projects that germinates in your head and then takes on a life of its own.

Now, as I understand it, the Afrika Korps tanks came off the assembly line in gray and then got oversprayed with that cool desert yellow. Is that correct?

See here, this is what’s doing it for me;

t was not until they deployed to North Africa that the colour of German tanks was seen as a major problem. Obviously, a dark grey tank was too conspicuous for use on the dry earth and sand, so the Afrika Korps decided to paint their tanks a sandy tan colour. It proved to be difficult to cover the grey, especially as the paint often had to be diluted with petrol, so there was enough to cover all the vehicle. In the sandy, gritty environment the base colour soon showed through on edges and other exposed areas, and the camouflage paint had to be touched up frequently.

Sauce: https://www.quora.com/Why-did-Nazi-Germ ... stly-green

Now here’s a peek inside my head, my creative process. Look at how many edges there are on this thing:

Image

There will be chipping down to hull red on the feet. Definitely. The desert is a harsh environment for Imperial AT-ST Walkers. This ain’t the forest moon of Endor... but yeah. I was thinking of black basing it, the. Hull red in chipping areas. Then German (Panzer) Gray. Then the cool sandy yellow I’m so enamored with, just up to the edges, let that gray show through a bit. I think it’s make for a really cool effect.

Not quite. The initially deployed tanks were in gray, locally camouflaged with mud, then any surviving vehicles received the sand paint in theater over the gray paint. Reinforcement and replacement vehicles were usually factory painted in the “Tropen” desert colors, or at forward depots prior to shipment to Africa. That’s one reason why vehicles showed up in Russia in the Tropen Colors. Units and vehicles that were originally destined for Africa were diverted to the Eastern Front instead, and in the 1941 or later 1942 Tropen colors.

Ah, Carlos! Thank you for the clarification.

So in the interests of shoe-horning as much historical accuracy into my artistic vision as possible, would it be safe to say that the the early AT-ST walkers sent by the Reich to Africa to operate under Rommel’s command had their Tropen camouflage field applied? I mean, Hitler only sent AT-ST walkers to the front in africa early on after Rommel’s arrival. After that they switched at AT-AT walkers, as mentioned by Duke when he brought up the photograph he found.

Historical accuracy with this project is very important to me.

But yeah, no, seriously- as cheeky as I’m being with this, I want to do this AT-ST as if it were actually armor used back then. And if my use case above isn’t at lest *possibly* plausible, it’s okay- I can just go straight into the Tropen camo over hull red, that’s totally cool.

But obviously the first case would be preferable. I could get a lot of depth out of a scheme like that.
