1/32 Hasegawa Fw190D-9 Red One

Thanks guys! This build is really about all of the small details and it feels good to not have any nagging issues percolating in the back of my mind. Yes, that swastika was built up with many fine layers of very dark grey (not black) which I think contributed in the ghost effect of the overspray. That's one thing that I have to pay particular attention to in my builds. On one hand, the thin paint mixes allows for a reduction in the masking but I have to be careful not to skimp too much or else this happens.

I'm still working on fixing the seam between the horizontal stabs and the tail... got it cleaned up and ready for paint repairs.

It took me awhile to see it too, but what a tremendous job you did on the fix. I am like you in that I like to learn as much as I can, but that doesn't mean I'll do everything suggested right away. Most times it'll take me a good amount of time to get the nerve up to try it. So, keep those suggestions and critiques coming on my Thread.

As for your work; I don't feel qualified to offer anything, but I will continue to express my reactions and appreciation for whatever you do. That is, provided I can find the words to express what I'm really feeling when I look at your work.

Hi! I wanted to ask you a research question about the antenna mast on the fin, if that is okay. This comes from laying out ideas, what will be needed to rig the antenna aerial on the FW190 F-8, and may not strictly be relative to Doras used to defend Me 262s, but I will ask anyway if I may! I noted this feature on the IPMS Stockholm walkaround—a small eyelet. I used to think the connection and the tensioners were inside the metal sleeve at the top. Have you ever encountered a working diagram of these pieces? It may just be a feature of the Anton since these antennas were added to their designs, though. What do you think?

I'm still mulling over a tank model. And there's that Tamiya 1/32 Corsair looking me in the eye every time I walk into my modeling room. So I have some good candidates out there.

Bruce... I based the aerials on past Dora builds on comments and photos from the Squadron Fw190D Walk Around book. I don't have it in front of me but there was a spring tensioner mounted at the tail end of the aerial attached to the mast eyelet that you have pictured as well as a couple of oblong things hanging inline with the aerial. The book mentioned that the aerial was dark brown in color. The D-9 with the bulged canopy did not have a pulley system like the earlier non-bulged canopy and the aerial would droop when the canopy was slid backward into the open position.

The bulged canopy that was standard on the F-8 was the same used on later Doras so I think the aerial configuration would be the same, although the distance between the canopy and mast was greater on Dora due to the fuselage extension piece at the rear.

If you are building an 190A with a flat canopy, my references my have some drawings about the pulley configuration that kept the aerial taut when the canopy was opened.

I put a small red dot near the oblongs.

Yeah... those light colored objects hanging on the aerial in your photo. What are they? I replicated them using short sections of brass tubing...

I think they also added a second wire set for operating a ground based positioning system as well, but my pea-sized brain is overwhelmed. Perhaps those are weights/clips? The tensioner spring is inside the canopy, right?
