Much better! White backgrounds can be tricky to photograph. Depending on what type of metering the camera is set at, a white background may fool the camera into thinking that the entire photo is correctly exposed since there is so much white, while not accounting for the small dark-colored cockpit that is in the center of your frame. To account for this you can (a) zoom closer so that more of the dark subject fills the frame or (b) you can tell the camera to meter only at the center of your frame, essentially telling the camera, 'ignore the white background, I want to correctly expose only the area of my autofocus zone". This "spot meter" can be accessed by the small button to the left of the +/- button.

Lol thanks Bruce, I find the key is weathering and I'm not fully done with weathering yet, I have some chips and scuffs but still need to add a filter to some surfaces and maybe a pin wash.

I just read your manual, lol! It’s a setting called Exposure Compensation. It may be a simple, on off setting. If you find yourself in a situation like this you can try using this as John suggests.

No worries, Clint. It's always good to experiment. It may help to remember that an image that is too dark in video is preferable to one that is too light. As far as I can tell, you have no problem with composition or focus. The issue is more or less the position of yourself and the work relative to the light. So to put this simply it is all about lighting. It may help when you are doing a very dark object to use a grey background. I like the latest shots a lot except for your shadow, lol. This happens to me a lot so I usually reorient myself so that I am shooting from the edge of the table with the object in front of the camera. This way, your shadow falls on the floor and not on your background.

Sorry bro but the file properties on your downloaded pic said Nikon D70. My bad.

The metering mode on the DSC-HX80 is nested under MENU>CAMERA SETTINGS>METERING MODE. The fact that bumping up exposure comp 3 stops is still resulting in the cockpit a little too dark tells me that your camera is making erroneous metering assumptions as explained previously. Try either the spot metering or center to see if it makes a difference. Default is MULTI and the manual describes it like this: "Measures light on each area after dividing the total area into multiple areas anddetermines the proper exposure of the entire screen (Multi-pattern metering)". Or zoom in and fill more of the frame with the dark cockpit.
