Danke, Lyle. I appreciate what you said. Like John, I’ve heard that panel line pre-shading is “frowned upon” in certain circles. Many eschew it in-favor of Black Basing. Now, I’m a Black Baser myself. But I don’t like limits in my modeling or even in my life really in-general. I ain’t married to a given set of codified, arbitrary directives. Not in a strict sense anyway. I just happened to think that the Gray Green looks nice when certain areas are preshaded. And I made every effort possible to do it tastefully, just as you said, and your comment makes me feel good because I badly wanted to hit the “This Looks Like You Would Expect It To Look” mark. I’ve done my job. This is very good. This makes me happy. See? We can can have preshading and verisimilitude.LyleW wrote:This looks great! Panel line and shading/wash are done with "taste", as it were. It looks like you would expect this to look. Well done, sir. Well done.
Thank you, my friend. Thanks so much. I’m definitely going to finish this one, my man. And then after that, Imma build me a bigger one. My 1:32 Zeke just arrived at my house a few moments ago. I’m stoked. A 1:48 Zero, then a big 1:32 Zero, and then another crack at the Bird Cage Corsair, the big 1:32 for attempt #4. These’ll probably keep me busy all year HAHA.portman wrote:Stunning work Kenny - that looks blooming awesome!

Well, unless you’re using that model to survive (provide food clothing or shelter for you), it really does not matter if whatever technique that you choose to work with is all the rage or frowned upon.

I fully agree Carlos - at the end of the day its a toolbox and we should just use the techniques we feel like.Stikpusher wrote:Well, unless you’re using that model to survive (provide food clothing or shelter for you), it really does not matter if whatever technique that you choose to work with is all the rage or frowned upon.

A couple of years ago at AMPS, one of the big dogs there jokingly asked me if I ever built kits made in this century. I’m quite happy with all the older kits in my stash. Well... most of them anyways...

There is a school of repetition approach used in modeling which is I believe the root of dissension or fragmentation or simply bad behavior. I also think there is a surprising lack of solidarity (present company excepted) which could be improved. What is celebrated here is the individual right to do as they please within a supportive environment.
I was listening to a loud “creative” meeting a few minutes ago. One loud fella kept saying over and over again, “It’s not Shakespeare.” I suppose this is an apologia for a distinct lack of dramatic quality to his work. However, I think the phrase is ridiculous. There’s Shakespeare and then there’s you. Take ownership of your work and change what needs to be changed to improve your own work. Stop comparing it or not comparing it to someone else.
Same goes for everything creative, including this hobby. It’s your work, ultimately. However you want to build and paint it is again up to you. It’s your work, and that means something to you and to the rest of us, too. May all abide with their respective projects!

Good afternoon folks. Got a big update. I couldn’t wait to get started painting top-side. I flossed last night and painted this morning. Holy cow do I have a lot of photos. Let’s get to it:
1. I masked everything. Gotta mask everything:

2. I preshaded some panel lines with Black Green. Hardly any of which ended up pulling through, but that’s actually okay:

3. I put down a mottled coat of Olive Drab in select areas:

4. Next came another mottled coat, this time Deep Green:

5. And finally, we begin mottling in the actual color, Dark Green 2, which took a very long time.:

6. After much more mottling and also blending with the Dark green 2:

7. The result:

To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..
