Tamiya 1/48 Me262

Hi Gents,

Well here we go again - another day another wip thread

I actually started this at the end of last year but it got put aside for other projects that didn't get finished either ( I'm noticing a pattern). However as I'm really enjoying my Tamiya Stuart I thought I'd pick it up again -besides I've only ever built one Tamiya aircraft kit in the last ten years - what have I been doing with my life!!!!

I was also inspired to dig it out by our very own John's exceptionally brilliant 262 build earlier in the year.



I only got as far as painting up the cockpit - and I've only just noticed that one of the IP decals has slipped However I may well just leave it as it looks a lot worse in the photo then it does in the flesh. It's got clear on it anyway so I'm not sure how to fix it...





Obviously this builds not going to be anywhere near John's 1/32 scale beauty (and that really WAS a stunning build John - I re-read the thread this morning), but I'm hoping to get a nice clean build. I'm actually intended to paint it in captured USAAF marking but we'll see how I feel.

Let's hope I can finish this one - I NEED to finish something! My last finished build was last October!

You’re off to a nice start Stuart. And there is nothing like a Tamiya kit (most of the time) for refreshing your modeling mojo.

Since the IP is already clear coated, I would not fret about the decal slippage. Worst case you could look for a Yahu brand replacement IP.

Great to see you back with the 262, Stuart! I don't know much about the Tamiya kit but I'm guessing it'll be easier than the Trumpeter that I worked on. It wasn't a BAD kit but I definitely had to wrestle with it at times. The cockpit looks wonderful so far... I can't even tell which instrument decal went astray. Are the front edge slats positionable? I took a bit of grief for posing mine closed... apparently, they should be dropped for any aircraft that is at rest.

Thanks man - from you that means a lot. If I recall, the basic cockpit colours were Humbrol enamels and the IP decal had some of the colours for the instrument surrounds. I did have to hand paint the side panels though.

However good news with the slipped instrument decal. I hadn't clear coated it - it was just microsol/set. I've manged to re-wet it and move it (I had to cut around it so it didn't move the others). It's had another coat of set and is now drying. I'm really glad I got it sorted as it was bugging me.

If I remember know it was an experiment to see what the full decal looked like over a painted IP - not something I've done before.

Can't go wrong here this is a great kit, I'll be watching.

Thanks John that means a lot - the slipped decal was the top right on the main IP. It's fixed now though. I'm going to hit it with some mirco sol in the morning. Then I'll clear coat it. It is a nice kit thus far - superbly engineered. Mind you, you'd never know you had a battle with yours!

Nice sheet Bruce - I like the RAF markings.However, I've been thinking now that I've pulled this off the shelf and started to remember where I was going. I've actually got the extradecal sheet, and whilst I was looking at the sheet with fresh eyes I think I might go with this one rather than the USAAF markings...

I can't get that picture of John's 262 in it's BMF out of my mind. It looked so cool! This isn't BMF but silver dope. I think it'll look cool with the colourful Czech markings.

Sorry John, I meant to add - no they're not which is a shame. You probably could cut them out and drop them, I'm not sure I'd want to tackle that bit of surgery though.

It's been about 5 or 6 years since I built it so I can try to help. Thos kit has a white metal front nose gear bay right?
