Re: 1:48 Tamiya Corsair
Well there is no reason one cannot build a Fleet Air Arm Corsair as well as USN...

Lookin' good! Standing tall and proud.
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

Re: 1:48 Tamiya Corsair
That thing is beautiful Kenny!! I can't get over just how tall these things were.
Re: 1:48 Tamiya Corsair
Thank you, gentlemen.
At this point I have gotten further with a Corsair project than either of my previous attempts. And it feels good! Almost done with this little beauty and I’m a happy guy.

Re: 1:48 Tamiya Corsair

I am closer to wrapping this project up than I thought I was.
I needed a filter and I recalled really liking what the salt fade did for my last Corsair attempt. But I was hesitant to monkey with salt. Washing it off when you’re done is... a process... one that I didn’t want to deal with.
So I came up with an alternate method.
“Kenny X’s Ersatz South Pacific Salt Fade”
1. Grab a big piece of steel wool
2. Start pulling it apart until a net-like texture is achieved
3. Mix Tamiya Khaki 13:2 thinner to paint
4. Hold the steel wool over the surface and spray in a broad diffused pattern. Don’t be heavy handed
5. Mix Tamiya German Grey 13:2 Thinner to paint
6. Hold the steel wool over the surface and spray in a broad diffused pattern. Don’t Be Heavy Handed
7. Mix Tamiya White and Khaki (lighten the Khaki as much as you’d like) then mix that lightened Khaki 13:2 thinner to paint
8. Hold the steel wool over the surface and spray in a broad diffused pattern. DO. NOT. BE. HEAVY. HANDED.
This’ll lightly fade the coat of paint and tie-in the markings. It knocked the remaining shininess of them right back and faded them nicely into the paintwork.
[...]
After that came oils. A pin wash top-side and on the bottom of the wings there. I did a little dirtying on those wing surfaces as well.
The look I was going for with these effects is “Noticed but not *seen*” and once the oils have dried and mellowed, and a flat coat goes on, I feel confident I’ll have at least landed close to that mark.
Gear and the belly gets washes tomorrow.
Pigments after that.
