It must be something with 1/48 Corsairs. I built a Revell 1/48 Corsair because initially I thought that it was going to be an easy build. Man was I ever in for a surprise. That kit did end up in the trash can...……….twice. I was too far into it to turn back however and finished it up. Really enjoyed your interview.

And 1/72 ones as well - I've binned two.

Clint, I'm glad you are able to check that thread out. As for my 1/72 scale Dora, there are supposed to be several pics of the finished one out there somewhere. You'll mostly find them in past show pics from various So Cal model contests. You'd have to go back a few years though as I finished her in 2013. No big deal, it ain't your preferred scale anyway.

Blacksheep, that is a huge model; it extends over six feet when done. As for where it's gonna go, I don't know. I had another friend who'd built one and he used to keep it in the garage along one wall, before he finished the room addition that he placed it in.

Kenny, that is a great read. Good luck on the corsair when you get started on it.

Stuart, I've never tossed a 1/72 scale Corsair. I did complete three of them.... with ease!

I agree Lyle, Corsairs are the baddest of the bad in propeller driven fighters. There is a fellow IPMS club member in our chapter who flew those Corsairs in WWII. He had six confirmed kills in it. He said the hardest part about flying them was landing them with that long nose blocking the view of the runway ahead!

I have done a couple myself. I do remember doing the Revell kit from the Baa Baa Black Sheep television show. Kit was 1/32 scale, was molded in dark blue, included option for folded wings.
I did one in 1/72 scale a couple years ago and gave it to a work colleague for helping me find a few things I was looking for.
I don’t have one in my stash but wouldn’t mind getting a couple more in 1/48 scale this time.
One would be built up as Boyington’s stead and two more from the book Devotion. Devotion is about the famous U.S. Navy aviation duo during the Korea conflict - Lt. Tom Hudner searching for his wingman who happened to be a son of a Mississippi sharecropper in Ensign Jesse Brown who went down during a routine patrol.

It is a nice idea to understand the personality behind building models. Some build to be the most accurate. Others build only for fun. A good result is different from what you look like, it is good to see what is the personality of each member through the stories by modelers. As for me, my goal—I will build the complete aircraft world, like a 3D wikipedia. With more than 1200 built aircrafts, I have not build all, but I am on the way. There is a lot to build and show on SPAM!

1. First model kit?

Back in 1989 my first build with my dad was a 1:72 Revell F/A-18 Hornet.

2. Preferred scale?

For tanks it is 1:35. For aircraft it is 1:48. At times the model needs a different scale—for example a B-36 is big enough in 1:72.

3. Preferred subject or subjects?

I prefer exotic, seldom seen aircraft. If you see the model and have no idea what it is, then the model is the right subject to build.

4. Favorite model built to date?

Best kit on quality to build: Fw190A from Tamiya in 1:48; interesting to build with difficulties of options is the Roden DH-4.

5. Hardest model built to date?

Vultee P-66 Vanguard; Air Collection 1:48, the fit, the details, the surface quality all of this was a mess.

6. Holy Grail kit?

This is not an easy question to answer because I think in terms of the combination of detail, quality and interesting features of the real aircraft. Here are two: GasPatch models Salmson 2A2 and Mirage Hobby; Schusta/Schlasta 27b Halberstadt CL.II.

7. Favorite kit maker?

Hobbyboss, easy to build and good price.
Special Hobby—nice and seldom seen kits.

8. Favorite glue or glues?

Revell.

9. Favorite paint?

Revell Enamel.

10. What started you as a modeler?

My dad was a modeler and I was fascinated by the kits he built.
