A model 1/72 Polikarpov I-180 (third prototype)

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

The red Polikarpov is done!
After a oil wash I sealed everything in with a semi gloss coat. It came out a bit patchy in my opinion but I think that tinkering anymore with it wil make it worse instead of better.
I also added those typical wires that Polikarpov used for the landing gear.
All in all it was a difficult build due to the short shot fuselage and bad fit.

That is a sharp looking red Red Bird! Great job on this!

Great looking build. That pic of you holding it up really shows how tiny it is

After reading an article about this aircraft in an issue of FlyPast, I’ve gotta add this to my wish list. I need to get it in 1/32 and 1/48 scale.

Yes, it is tiny when you compare it to a P-51 or P-47. The Soviet didn’t have very powerful engines (basically developments of French and British engines) so they worked around that by making small lightweight airframes and light armament.

I am not sure if there is any kit of it in those scales. Ark makes a I-185 in1:48 so who know, maybe they will do the I-180 just as well.

Eduard and ICM has it in 1/48 scale, ICM typically got it in 1/32 scale. Mostly I-16 Type 24 variants.
