Scale Plastic Aircraft Modeler member interview

1. First model kit?

A 1/48 Hawk Cessna Super Skymaster. I used so much glue that I melted the wings

2. Preferred scale?

Aircraft 1/72, ships 1/350, tanks 1/72

3. Preferred subject or subjects?

Ships and planes.

4. Favorite model built to date?

I can’t pin one down. There have been so many, years worth

5. Hardest model built to date?

AMT NCC 1701D Enterprise back in the early 90’s. The kit was easy, but I painted all the little details by hand. This was before there were after-market decals available. Lately I’d have to say it was the 1/350 Trumpeter Prinz Eugen. I added photo etch and modifications to show it how it was at Bikini Island for the Atomic bomb tests

6. Holy Grail kit?

Wood, Mantua 1/98 HMS Victory.
Plastic 1/350 Hasegawa Akagi with full after market.
Both of which I have in the stash.

7. Favorite kit maker?

Planes, Tamiya.
Ships, whoever makes the particular ship I’m looking for.

8. Favorite glue or glues?

Tamiya Extra Thin, Bob Smith Industries CA.
I’m trying Flexy 5K CA for photo etch.

9. Favorite paint?

Testers Model Master for aircraft, Vallejo for ships. Weathering with oils.

10. What started you as a modeler?

My father. We worked on the old Revell Constitution together.

11. Most fun kit?

The Musashi wreck. I used an old 1/350 Tamiya Yamato hull that I kept and modified it to portray the IJN Musashi that Mr. Paul Allan found in March 2015.

A great segment! I remember that old Revell USS Constitution ship kit as well. Fond memories...

Great interview. I remember building Enterprise D too and painting all the windows and escape pods by hand.

Really good interview and one I've been looking forward to for a while now. I don't do ships but if I did do one then I'd have to go with that same Akagi kit with all the aftermarket that you're talking about. If I did that, however, I'd have to sell off all of my aircraft and car kits because that would be the last model I'd ever build as it'd take me all the way to the grave to get it finished. lol
