I haven't had much bench time but worked on the seams last night, painted the cowl and propeller, and the gear doors/wells that weird metallic blue. I'm going to try a completely different method of weathering than my usual on this one. I'm going to do some black basing followed by my usual oil pin wash but I will also be going back over the whole thing with oils for streaks, smoke and the like. We'll see how it turns out.

I black based the Zero and added the mottling. I than sprayed the color coat and was admiring and pretty proud of myself when I notice that the color didn't seem right. I sprayed JA gray instead of JN gray

Back to the booth tonight.

I repainted with the JN grey. I think it looks better.
The decals are thick but were able to settle down. Now comes the washes. I'm going to try something diffrent on this one.

I’m done with the Zero. The color looks greener against the white background but the Japanese did use a grey green on their Zeros. This was a nice kit although there was quite a bit of small flash that needed to be cleaned if one were to look close. For the price, I would recommend it and I liked the option to fold the wingtips however, I will stick to a Hasegawa or Tamiya kit for next 1/72 Zeke. I think I have 3 more Hasegawa Zero’s in the stash, all model 52s.
The different weathering process I tried was a thick oil wash rather than my usually oil pin wash. I also used oils for the fuel and smoke stains.

Nice finish, Steve!

A nice trick to get those decals to sink into the panel lines is to run your x-acto through the decal along the lines after they are fully dried.

Personally I give the fresh cuts a lick of Liquid Cement to make sure they don't go anywhere and snuggle down into those cracks, but using LC on decals can be disastrous if you get heavy handed lol.
