HitKit 1/48 MiG-3 White 5

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

May is present to you my build of the HitKit 1/48 MiG-3. This build was started twelf years ago and has had its ups and downs. And then some more downs.
It is finished in the disputed/hypothetical colours of Alexander Pokryshkin's white 5.
Pokryshkin started his ace career bad with a friendly fire kill on a Su-2 but went on to record 65 kills on German aircraft.

The build tread is here:

The end result is:

This the second vacform I started and the third I finished. Because of the long build period not everything is up to my current standards. Therefore I used it to test the use of Alkan paints and chose this well known but probably fictitious colour scheme.

And a size comparison shot with a Spitfire.

The Russians used an uprated version of an French 1930's engine so had little horsepower and had build small and light planes.

A vac kit? Not for me, thanks...

Maybe it took some time for you to finish this one, but it was worth the time. Looking at the wheel bay alone I could not imagine this being a vac kit. Looks like a HobbyBoss injection-moulded one, speak: nice! The black basing (hi Doogs!) shows on the brighter underside, hard to see on the dark green upper side. You got a bravery point from me for finishing this one!

Agree fully with Thomas, impossible to tell from the pics that it is a Vac kit,

great work Borg, nice weathering!

Will you continue using Alkan paints ? Happy with them ?

Thanks for the kind words. I like those Akan paints and wil use them again. But I will add some white to lighten them for more scale effect.

Nice work there Borg! :shoutout: Most impressive of all is that you did ths from a vacuform kit! You sir are a true modeler!!! :dogwag:

On a side note, your subject, Aleksander Pokryshkin, opened his score with the Mig-3 but scored the vast majority of his kills in the P-39. And he outscored all Western Allied aces in their "better" aircraft.

Brilliant work Borg, and even more commendable since it's a vac-formed kit. Amazing work, you truly are a masterful modeler. This was well worth the wait.

Yes, he did very good on the P-39, the Russians really liked those: the Allison engines was not that complicated and it had a lot of firepower. Especially compared to the likes of this MiG. It only had one .50 and two.30's....

As for vacform building, all I can say is just try one. They are not that hard and some really rare types of aircraft can be found as vacforms.
