1/72 Italeri/Zvesda Kamov Ka-29 Helix

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

Here is a build I have started over a year ago. Some of you guys who are/where on different forums might remember it. It is the Italeri Kamov Ka-29. This is a reboxing of the Zvesda kit. It has also been reboxed by Revell, which has better decals and instructions. In fact I am using the Revell instructions because they are much more clear on how to build the complex rotor assembly.
However, if you really want a Helix, buy the Hobby Boss one, this has been quite a nasty build because of all the flash on the pieces. And all the small details like the handles are a bear to sand.

Anyway, here are some pics from the archive just to show what is already done:

Looks like a helicopter to me! Nice work to this point.
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

Well, you have not seen the underside.... it needed a lot of putty!

My rationale was to have the best possible allignment on the top sde, with all the compound curves and details, at the cost of the allignment of the underside, which is pretty flat and easy to sand and already had some sink marks which would have to be filled.

I have been using mr surfaced 500 on the underside. It needed quite some filler but because of the flat underside it was an easy fix..

I sprayed the Kamov black as a base for shading. My airbrush skills are a bit "rusty" so the coverage was not complete. But I always think it is better to do to little instead of to much because you can always add more.

I finally did some more work on the Kamov. I did the masking and fired up the compressor. I did the whole camouflage in one sitting. Did the dark grey first the light. Which was quite difficult because in the "in between" stage the difference between the two grey is unclear. But I am happy with the end result.
