Resin cast MiG-3 early

I have been working on a master for an early MiG-3. It has several changes compared to an late version, all around the engine. I used a Trumpeter/Hobbyhoss kit as a base, made the changes and added more interior details.

Wonderful casting and beautiful fresh clean details! That looks fantastic. I love working with resin! I also read through your thread about finding old kits and look forward to what happens next! Rescuing old projects is just as exciting for me as starting new ones. Cheers!

I have cleaned the casting. And test fitted it. It needs a bit more work to fit. Which is interesting because the Hobbyboss kit was the base. Apparently there is some loss of accuracy when making a copy.

Resin casting is out of my league. But here you are… killing it!

That is an ambitious project with all the undercuts in the cockpit. Nice detail added on the cowl.

I use approximately 4 Bar of pressure during the casting. That helps with undercuts and air bubbles. I also use release agent on the mould so the casting is not stuck to the mould.

Resin casting sounds intimidating but if you stick to the guideline’s it is not that difficult. However, making a master is where the real difficulty is. You want an accurate and detailed master. And that takes a lot of time. Even in this case where Hobbyboss basically did 90% of the work and I mostly had to adjust panel lines and hatches. I have been working on and off for a period of two years on this master (maybe I am just slow). The mould making and casting was done in a week.

I don’t think you’re slow at all, you’re not under the pressure of any external deadline so it’s a passion project for you. You have done a superb job of translation from buck to casting!

I started on the build. The fit of the fuselage and the wings was obviously not as good a the original. There also were a few short shots. So putty was needed. On the other hand, it is still an easy kit. So the rest should be quite easy…

However I am a bit of an MiG-3 aficionado so I will as a bit more detail around the air intake etc. 

I haven’t decided on the scheme, it is going to be white 40 or white 42.
