1/48 AMT P-51D

Post by Stikpusher »

This si my next project, AMT’s boxing of the 70’s vintage Otaki/Arii P-51D kit.

Image

It’s a pretty nice kit of this vintage… decent cockpit, most of the Packard Merlin engine, recessed exterior panel line & rivet detail. I made quick progress on the engine & cockpit, plus the wings

next up I need to fill in many of the wing panel lines as WWII NMF P-51s had the panel joints puttied, sanded and sealed to maintain the laminar flow wing. Hello Mr Surfacer…

Nice vintage kit. First time I've seen you do a P-51 Mustang. What marking are you going with?

I’m gonna do my best to minimize changes on this, so it will be 90% OOB and just a few adds or swaps here and there, like those bars on the pilot seat that I added. The canopy is one piece between the hood and windscreen, so I won’t dive deep in the cockpit. :hmm:

TJ, it sure does fit well. On test fitting, there will be some slight gaps at the wing root, but nothing major.

Kari, it sure is a decent kit. The exterior detail is gorgeous, and it really is falling together fast. If the kit has any weak spots, it would
be the decals. Oh yeah, the pilot figure too. Otaki made horrible pilots…

I haven’t built a P-51 since around 2007 or so, so it has been awhile. I ordered a decal sheet for this, so once that arrives, I’ll post it on here. It’s some CBI markings… with a twist…

Very cool! I had planned on doing a P-51 before too long.

Thanks Mike. This kit is getting my modeling mojo flowing again :hmm: I look forward to seeing your P-51.

I have a busy afternoon ahead, but I did get the Mr Surfacer 500 applied on the wing panel lines that need to be removed

I’ll reapply after sanding and seeing where shrinkage while drying needs to be addressed

Nice one. This is a kit a purchased a fiddled a bit with before the Eduard versions came out. It is always a pleasure to see a P-51D build and doubly so when it’s built by you.

Looks fun Carlos. Those Otaki kits were great fun back in the day. 109G was my fave.
