Testors Supermarine S6B

Post by Gary Brantley »

Here's one that has never been seriously posted. It was built so many years ago now; maybe the very early 1990s if I had to guess. Of course, it's the ancient ex-Hawk model, first released in 1948, so yes, it's even older than Lyle and me!

The airplane was the first to fly 400 mph. I added a seat and some other cockpit detail, as well as anchoring fittings on the float ends. When first built, I left off the crude canopy and decals. I thought that eventually I would find a piece of plastic packaging that had some shape I could adapt in its place. Well, after 30 years of looking at it on the bottom shelf of one of my display cabinets, I got it out a year or so ago and finished it up, so to speak. The canopy still looks like crap and I managed to knock off several rigging wires. I thought that I could finesse them back but that was a wash too. :headbang: So, I just told myself "it's done!"

It looks kinda dumb to have a float-plane just sitting there on dry floats. Maybe someone can suggest a better way to display it?

Aww, thats quite enough pics for a poor looking model! Lol, I've noticed that the galvanized metal strips that I used for bracing/rigging work have begun to show rust spots; that's how bleeding old this one is!

Well, you could take to the bathtub with you….

Looks pretty good to me.
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

I donated that same kit to one forum member here a long time ago to Minature(spelling?)

That’s a real beauty there Gary! :shoutout: :shoutout: :shoutout: :shoutout: It almost begs for some sort of diorama or vignette scene… in the water or on a transport dolly by a seaplane ramp. :hmm:

 Now, there's a good idea! Maybe even try it out on the stock tank? My old Texaco tanker, the SS Texaco North Dakota, took a few cruises around them when I was a boy. Thanks, Lyle!

Thank you, Carlos! I've just never given it enough love, I guess. You are right, it really needs a better presentation. What to do? :hmm:

Well for an old build that looks dam good to me Gary - very nicely done. You don't often see these built up so it's a treat to see one.

Thanks, my friend! It is a bit rough around the edges, but can't we certainly see the Spitfire's lineage here? Shapes of things to come, indeed!
