Voodoo Magic

Post by dmminiatures »

As promised, I've completed my 1/48 Revell-Monogram F-101B Voodoo this weekend. I love to build Century Series aircraft and this one one kit that I would not want to miss building. Hope you like it! Cheers, Monty

I got this kit from a friend a few years ago when he was returning from Seoul. He asked what I wanted and I said 'get me the R/M Voodoo!" So that's what he got me. He game me the parts, instruction sheet, and decals in a Ziplock, while the box was flattened.

This is my 8th model build while away living in Surabaya for the last 11 month. I am really happy that I could be as productive away from my desk as if was in my own home.

The only regret was that I didn't work on the kit sooner. I realized that the decals were dying when I was working on the decals. the "U.S. Air Force" came off in smaller pieces and I was in despair. I took hours just meddling with it, though eventually I finally got it right. lots of lots of patience. Another problem was the raised panel lines that just got into the way of of the decals. There were air trapped air everywhere and the decal solution was not helping much.

Finally, I did get some help from my trusty 'lacquer thinner' treatment which just 'melts' the decals into its place. I rarely use it, but at desperate moments like this, its the only way to go for me.

You would never know the decals were a problem, Monty. Great piece of work. I like the 101. For years, our Air National Guard unit flew the RF101 and I had the fortune to be working at the airport when they did. They would stop traffic most days if they did a steep climb out.
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

Another great member of the Century Series, and quite apparently the Voodoo magic has worked.
One of the nicest F-101B I've seen.

But...
Why didn't you sand down those cast-on slime lights?

Thanks Lyle. Very lucky of you... and it must have been a real sight to see them in the flesh!

Beautiful work indeed Monty! :shoutout:

Can you explain a bit on your "lacquer thinner treatment" for the decals? :hmm:
"Surely I have made my meaning plain? I intend to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I have deprived your ship of power, and when I swing 'round, I intend to deprive you of your life."
